Some words about the Blossoming Almond Branch painting:
Van Gogh relocated to Arles in the south of France in 1888. He hoped to see bright, light-filled landscapes that would delight him and inspire him to paint new works. However, the beautiful weather kept him waiting. Arles experienced unprecedented snowfalls in February. Within a few weeks, the soil had been blanketed with a half-meter layer of snow. Van Gogh attempted to paint outside, but the extreme cold made it appear nearly impossible. He painted still lifes and self-portraits at home the majority of the time.
Despite the cold, almonds have already bloomed, heralding the impending warming. Van Gogh painted a branch in a simple clear glass. Van Gogh’s main character in this canvas creates a bright light falling from the window. Still cold winter sun rays penetrate the glass, illuminating the delicate white petals.
Long blue shadows fall on the table, written in yellow strokes. A bright red stripe enlivens the gray background, and Van Gogh’s broad signature is printed in the upper left corner in the same red. The composition is similar to Japanese ikebana, but the performance style is more akin to impressionism than Japanese art. The still life is filled with light, and it expresses the author’s upbeat mood as well as the state of nature, which has been revitalized in anticipation of the impending spring.
