About the Matisse The Dance print:

Why “The Dance” by Henri Matisse is a Masterpiece

The Artist’s Unique Approach

Matisse reduces everything possible in “The Dance,” exhibiting his individual style. Why? To transmit a meaningful message, he removes all extraneous aspects, leaving only what powerfully conveys his notion.

Subtle Complexity

A closer inspection reveals that the painting’s seeming simplicity is misleading. While the land is only shown in green and the sky in blue, the figures are created in a highly abstract style with only one color - red. The composition lacks any sense of dimension or depth. However, the movements of these figures, particularly the leftmost and topmost ones, are remarkably detailed. Matisse captures a stunning and passionate stance with only a few precise and well-defined lines.

The Journey to Recognition

Visitors to the Hermitage today admire the picture, although it took a long time for “The Dance” to become well-known. “What makes it a masterpiece?” many people still question. Let’s look into its past.

A Pioneering Commission

Henri Matisse painted “Dance” in 1910 at the request of Russian collector Sergei Shchukin. This piece was part of a larger commission that included two other panels: “Music” (which is currently housed at the Hermitage with “Dance”) and “Bathing” (which remained unfinished, with just sketches extant). This was Matisse’s first large order, and it provided him with financial stability for a period.

Controversial Reception

Shchukin was first satisfied with the outcome and displayed “Dance” at the Paris Exhibition in 1910. The audience, however, who were used to traditional academic painting, were caught away by Matisse’s strong brushwork and the simplicity of his figures. The sculpture elicited passionate reactions as well as negative feedback. Some even questioned Shchukin’s taste, almost forcing him to cancel the order, though he later changed his mind.

Revolutionary Fauvism

So, what makes Henri Matisse’s “Dance” a masterpiece? It’s a masterpiece because it exemplifies Fauvism, a revolutionary art style pioneered by Matisse that began in France in 1905.

Fauvism’s Bold Characteristics

Fauvism is distinguished by:

Bold use of vivid, unusual colors done in broad strokes.
Simple shapes and compositions that purposefully avoid complication.
Their works are devoid of chiaroscuro, emphasizing clarity.

Global Impact

Fauvism had a major impact on the art world in its four years of existence, breaking traditional aesthetic rules.

Recognition and Appreciation

The New York Museum of Modern Art owns a Matisse painting titled “Dance,” which is similar to the Hermitage version but with a slightly different color scheme. This work, commissioned by an American collector in 1930, displays a rising respect for Matisse’s style as well as a favorable reaction among contemporaries.

A Unique Art Phenomenon

Because of its distinctiveness and the significant influence of Fauvism, Henri Matisse’s paintings from the early twentieth century are regarded as a notable French art phenomenon.
