Some words about “The basket with oranges” painting:
Henri Matisse, “Basket of Oranges,” 1913
Oranges are sacred to Matisse in the same way that apples are to Cezanne. These orange fruits became symbols of joy and pure color for the great Fauvist. Pablo Picasso purchased Matisse’s painting “Basket of Oranges” in 1945 because his beloved Francoise Gilot liked it. She was ecstatic about the warmth and energy she felt as a result of her work. And imagine her surprise when she learned, firsthand, from the artist, that he painted a “Basket of oranges” during one of his most difficult periods, when he was overcome by the darkest thoughts.
“This painting is the result of suffering,” Matisse explained to Picasso’s beloved. As a thank you for the purchase, the artist sent a box of citrus fruits to his friend Picasso on New Year’s Eve every year, believing in the health-giving properties of oranges and the restorative, healing power of his art.
