In 1421, the Netherlands was a terrible flood. Seventy-two villages were flooded. 100,000 people drowned.
This event after 4 centuries was the basis of the painting by Lawrence Alma-Tadema «Flood in Bisbos in 1421». The artist painted the story of the local legend. According to it, after the crash, the survivors found a crib on a small piece of land. It was washed to shore. In it, like a madman, a cat rode from the edge to edge. The villagers decided to save the mad animal. But what an astonishment it was when they saw a child in bed asleep. The cat jumping in and out kept the bed balanced so the water couldn’t get to it.
