Nude Sitting on a Divan Art Print

Modigliani returned to active painting after abandoning his sculpture experiments in 1914. It was during this time that his paintings formed their unique style.

Modigliani’s nakedness, both then and now, is largely viewed in light of his reputation as a social butterfly. The rosy cheeks of his nudes are invariably interpreted as a sign of sexual arousal, which is true for the majority of his “nudes.”

“Nude sitting on a sofa” is even more remarkable. A beautiful woman sitting cross-legged on a couch in a slipped slip sends us a friendly smile rather than a beckoning one. Her flirtatious gesture with her left hand to conceal her nakedness leaves only a portion of her left breast exposed.

The true center of the composition, however, is the line of her left thigh, which forms a kind of arch over her right leg, giving the image more intimacy and human warmth than overt sexuality.

The way Modigliani depicts the eyes is, of course, a distinguishing feature of his portraits. In his portraits, the eyes are frequently left empty and undeveloped, giving the impression of dark caves or a piercing gaze. None of the contemporary artists used this technique before Modigliani.

Modigliani could borrow it from extant examples of Greek bronze sculpture with lost eye inlays or, for example, “eyeless” Cycladic sculpture if he devoted enough time to the art of sculpture.

However, the purposefulness with which Modigliani deprives many of his portrait heroes of their appearance causes tension and anxiety, and in “Nude sitting on the sofa,” smiling so warmly and friendly, this dissonance with empty eye sockets and the line of the nose interrupted at eye level becomes especially sharp.

When viewed up close, the model’s eyes resemble a mosaic of mirror glass, some of which has been lost.

Thus, the eyes, which normally allow one to peer into the depths of the human soul, form an impenetrable barrier between us and the woman depicted in this portrait.
